Why I HATE Windows: by Bill Gates

Gates 2.0

It reads like a fake. Seriously, when I read this supposed email from Bill Gates to his team about the usability problems he encountered trying to download Windows Moviemaker for his computer, it felt like a fake. But it’s NOT. It was just one of hundreds of emails that were released into the public domain as part of the anti-trust suit that Microsoft was involved in.

He encounters so many problems trying to download Moviemaker that he gives up:

So I give up on Moviemaker and decide to download the Digital Plus Package.

I get told I need to go enter a bunch of information about myself.

I enter it all in and because it decides I have mistyped something I have to try again. Of course it has cleared out most of what I typed.

I try (typing) the right stuff in 5 times and it just keeps clearing things out for me to type them in again.

So after more than an hour of craziness and making my programs list garbage and being scared and seeing that Microsoft.com is a terrible website I haven’t run Moviemaker and I haven’t got the plus package.

The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind.

To all the people who keep defending Microsoft, this is EXACTLY why I switched to a Mac. I had so much trouble just trying to edit a simple video on my PC that I bought a whole new computer, learned an entirely new operating system and it was still easier than trying to get Moviemaker to work.

  1. You hit the nail on the head when you said that it is easier to learn a whole new system on a whole new computer than trying to edit videos on Windows.

  2. I have had it with the pc. I love my mac. I love computers. I want them to work correctly. I want to sit down and just work. Not beg, plead, slaughter innocent animals just to get the dumb computer to work properly. I am tired of it going in circles when all I want is to have it run correctly and stop asking the same question over and over. I am a student and bought a pc because colleges are so cheap now they have to have PCs and not macs. I am in graphics, macs are loved by all because they are stable, work right, don’t give you sickening messages over and over and constantly tick a box in your fact screaming this or that needs your attention!!!! OMG the computer just might break if you don’t answer these? I run CS3. It works fine. Great programs. But getting my brand new, 4 month old computer to run right? Fuggedaboutit. Nope it has a major catastrophic hard drive crash. Brand new and has a majore hard drive crash, disintegrates ugly. The tech was amazed. Hadn’t seen that in some time he says. I am sick of having to have a an IT person in my back pocket. All the money I pour into stupid windows machines justifies buying macs. They just plain work. I don’t have them in to the fixit guy over and over and over at $200 to $400 per every visit because some new problem has arisen and needs yet another piece of hardware. I am sick of the windows is best attitude. I guess if you are used to eating crap you like crap. I’ll take steak anytime thank you.
